Adolescence is a British drama that tells the story of Jamie, a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate. But this isn\u2019t a whodunnit. The series reveals the perpetrator early on. What it demands we ask \u2014 and refuse to let go of \u2014 is a much harder question:<\/p>\n\n\n
Why did it happen?<\/p>\n\n\n
As the author of Keeping Families Safe on Social Media, this question haunts me \u2014 because I know that Adolescence isn\u2019t fiction for many families. It\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n
This Isn\u2019t Just About Teen Boys<\/p>\n\n\n
One of the biggest misconceptions I\u2019ve seen in conversations about this series is the idea that it\u2019s only relevant to parents of teenage boys.<\/p>\n\n\n

It\u2019s happening earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n
It\u2019s happening faster.<\/p>\n\n\n
And it\u2019s not getting better.<\/p>\n\n\n
The Internet Isn\u2019t Hiding This Content \u2014 It\u2019s Serving It Up<\/p>\n\n\n
The danger isn\u2019t buried deep in the web.<\/p>\n\n\n
It\u2019s front and center \u2014 in YouTube recommendations, Instagram reels, Discord chats, TikTok trends, and comment threads on gaming platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n
Children are exposed to:<\/p>\n\n\n
\u2022 Toxic masculinity<\/p>\n\n\n
\u2022 Hyper-sexualised content<\/p>\n\n\n
\u2022 Online bullying and humiliation<\/p>\n\n\n
\u2022 Red pill and incel ideologies<\/p>\n\n\n
\u2022 Unrealistic expectations around gender, status, and identity<\/p>\n\n\n
All of this is shaping their beliefs about themselves and the world long before their emotional brain has caught up.<\/p>\n\n\n
Adolescence Is the Wake-Up Call We\u2019ve Been Ignoring<\/p>\n\n\n
The final episode offers no resolution. No reassurance. No tidy ending.<\/p>\n\n\n
It simply leaves us with discomfort \u2014 which is exactly where we need to be.<\/p>\n\n\n
Because this is real life. And for many families, there is no neat ending.<\/p>\n\n\n
As adults, we can\u2019t afford to ignore this.<\/p>\n\n\n
Whether you\u2019re a parent, sibling, grandparent, teacher, or mentor, you have a role to play in helping the children in your life navigate the online world.<\/p>\n\n\n
